Adding an Exception to Windows XP Firewall

Browse next item
Some programs that need to allow a remote computer to talk to it do not add exceptions to the Windows XP firewall.

There are to methods of doing this. Program Based and Port Based.  If the program is unknown which is the case with many windows services you have to use the port based method.

The following steps are the same for both methods.
    1. Open the "Control Panel" and select the "Windows Firewall" applet.
    2. Select the "Exceptions" tab at the top.
    3. Verify that the program/port is not already in the list and has a check mark.

Program Based Exceptions:
    1. Click on the "Add Program..." button.
    2. A list of applications that windows knows about will be listed. If it is not listed click on the "Browse" button and locate it manually.
    3. Select the program then click on the "OK" button.
    4. Verify that the "Program/Service" has a check next to it.
    5. Click on the "OK" button.

Port Based Exceptions:
    1. Click on the "Add Port" button.
    2. Enter a Name of the port or port number
    3. Enter the port number
    4. Select either "TCP" or "UDP" radio buttons
    5. Click on the "OK" button
    6. Verify that the "Program/Service" has a check next to it.
    7. Click on the "OK" button.
