Occationally you'll be required to perform operations as the root (or super user). The root user is has special priveledges, and while logged in as root you need to be very carefull. Most often you will use the console screen on your server for root operations. To log in on the server console, login as follows:
Press CTRL+ALT+F1 (While holding down the Control key and the ALT key simultaneously, press F1)
This will bring you to the first vitual console screen session. We are looking for a login banner. Something like:
SCO OpenServer(TM) Release 5 (your.server.com) (ttyp0)
login:
At the login: type root
At the Password: type in your password. You will not see the letters that you type.
At this point you will see a PDS menu that may look somthing like this..
SYSTEM MANAGER'S MENU
1) Shutdown the system 2) Backup menu 3) System administrator's menu 4) List current users 5) List current processes 6) Evict all users 7) Exit to unix 8) Unix mail 9) Sleeper menu 10) Log off 11) VSI-FAX menu 12) Powerchute Status (UPS)
SELECTION :
Petroleum Rx staff may ask you to operate this menu to perform support tasks from time to time. To exit this menu select
7) Log off'
Usually you will be asked to select
7) Exit to unix
There are many commands that can be performed at the Exit to Unix or Unix shell prompt.
Logging in from your Workstation.
You can login from your Desktop PC as well. Typically your PC has been setup with a program called ICE.TCP or Dejawin.
Start the program as usually but at the login: prompt use root and at the Password: prompt use your root password. When the root menu appears follow the above directions
